Each year my family’s yearly Christmas getaway takes us south for a few weeks to just over the Queensland New South Wales boarder, to the Tweed Coast. A great area with some great townships and watering holes! Generally a day trip here and there takes us to one of the more touristy towns in the vicinity, and Byron Bay gets a visit from us most years. Even though I’d normally stay away from this alternative holiday mecca during this period, this time a strategically planned trip would see some benefits – in the way of a few brewery visits to the two breweries that Byron harbours.
The main road from the highway into Bryon normally is bumper to bumper during this time, so when you come to the commercial estate on the left it’s well worth dropping into Continue Reading
Six String Brewing Co – Dark Red IPA
Beers come from a can, they where put there by a man! Would be a good line to a song, but unfortunately already taken by a peach! Seems to be a growing trend with craft brewers in recent times to can their beers, which Six String Brewing Co have done with their entire core beer range. Finally now we are seeing their range make its way north of the border from this Central Coast brewery. Continue Reading
Clown Shoes – Undead Party Crasher Imperial Stout
Clown Shoes is renowned for its great artwork and wacky names for their beers but this one here saw them being sued for trademark infringements. Originally called ‘Vampire Slayer’, it seemed that another beverage company saw that it was a little to close to the name of their beer. Anyhow a long story short, Clown Shoes lost out and renamed their stout “Undead Party Crasher” and brewed with holy water. The bottles label artwork gets the last Continue Reading
Beard and Brau – Red Tail
Beard And Brau Brewery is another SE Queensland brewery (originally from SA) based at Tamborine (becoming a popular area for Brewers). On a recent return trip from a footy game we dropped into the Bearded Dragon and had a recovery session on the Beard and Brau beers on tap there! On departure we rattled the bars on the drive-through and grabbed a carton of Red Tail for the trip home (yes Bearded Dragon i was sober enough to remember that you Continue Reading
Bridge Road / Nøgne Ø – India Saison
The description straight form the bottle says – India Saison is the hoppy, crisp and refreshing result of a north south collaboration between Norwegian craft brewery Nøgne Ø & Bridge Road Brewers. A specialty Saison yeast strain and Australian Galaxy and Stella hop varieties have been used in crafting this beer.
So this collab seems to have a mix of Continue Reading
Baird Beer – Single Take Session Ale
Good to see this Japanese craft beer from Baird Brewing Co make its way into Oz. They’ve been around for a few years and just recently moved into a new brewery. I noticed with both beers that they both seem bottle conditioned and looked into this a bit more to find they are kräusened. Kräusening is the traditional method used by German brewers to carbonate their beer and is done by adding a bit of the most recent batch of beer to the batch that was made previously. Anyhow enough of the history lesson, time to get into the beers. Continue Reading
Bacchus Brewery Cellar Door
Well I’ve got to rave about this, being a Redlander and beer lover, having one of Australia’s best craft breweries a stones throw from my base. Funny enough about 25 years ago I used to have beers in just about in the same spot as where Bacchus Brewing Co is now, when it was a dual screen Drive-In Theatre. Now I get the opportunity to do it again, but now with a better selection of beers and i don’t have to sneak them down. Over the back fence of the brewery was one of last of the Redlands turf farms. (Possibly ideas for a few heritage brews names).
I’ve been buying home brew stuff from Craftbrewer (Bacchus Brewing Co sister company) for a few years and had a few testers from what they had on tap, as well. I was envious when seeing inner city Brisbane bars having Bacchus Beers on tap and finding it hard to travel over Tingalpa Creek to go to the big smoke in hope there was still beer in the keg. So after hearing from the crew at Bacchus a while back that they planned on kicking off a bar my hunt for the Bacchus Brew was made a lot easier.
